Just imagine opening your closet and seeing only pieces that you love and fit! How good would that feel? A well-organized closet can completely change how your day begins. Many of my organizing clients share that closet organizing feels overwhelming and stressful. Clothing often carries emotions—memories of the past or feelings of being stuck in the present. There also may be a huge volume of clothing and shoes which can feel like a lot to go through!

Today, I want to share a simple, supportive approach to help you move past those roadblocks to create a closet that feels functional, flattering, and inspiring to use every day.

How to Avoid the Closet Overwhelm

Many people think that when organizing a closet, they have to remove all of their clothing at once, à la Marie Kondo, but often this tends to be too overwhelming for most people. Either there isn’t enough room for all the clothing to be placed in a temporary location as you sort, or enough uninterrupted time to review it all.

Instead, begin by removing one category of clothing at a time. This makes the process feel much more manageable and allows you to make thoughtful decisions without pressure.

Start with something like sweaters. Take them all out, review each piece, and try items on if needed. Ask yourself: Is it comfortable? Do I love it? Do I actually wear it? If the answer is no, it may be time to let it go. Your closet should reflect who you are today—not who you used to be.

Set aside clothing for donation or recycling, and then return the pieces you love and wear regularly back to your closet. From there, you can move on to the next category: pants, tops, and so on.

Working in sections gives you the freedom to pause whenever you need. You can step away, come back refreshed, and continue at your own pace. Over time, those small, intentional steps add up to a closet that truly supports you.

Avoiding Decision Fatigue When Organizing Your Closet

You probably have a lot of items in your closet that require a decision to be made. Some of the choices might include: Keep, Donate, Recycle, Consign, Store, Memorabilia, or Try on. That’s a lot to think about! This is one of the reasons working with a Professional Organizer can be so valuable—we help guide you through those decisions with confidence and keep you on track.

A Professional Organizer can also help make sure your items find the right next home. I take a carload of client donations after most sessions and put real thought into where they go. For specialty items, that extra care makes all the difference. I recently discovered Gung Ho Ministries, a clothing boutique that donates all profits to Veterans, and just dropped off some beautiful designer pieces from a client. They were thrilled!

Here are a few helpful tips:

Before you begin, set out bins labeled with these categories. This simple step will help you easily funnel items where they belong, and prevents having unnamed piles, which can quickly add to feelings of overwhelm.

If there are items that don’t fit now but that you realistically think that you may get back into, consider setting them aside to be stored in another space. Place them in a labeled bin with either the size or “Soon to Fit!” so they’re intentional, contained, and easy to revisit.

As I mentioned, clothing can carry a lot of emotion. You may find pieces that have shifted into the “memorabilia” category without you even realizing it. For these items, try taking a photo of each item, and then ask yourself if you truly want to keep it or not. If it is tucked away in a bin somewhere, it may not be serving you in your day-to-day life. If you do decide to keep something meaningful, place it in a dedicated memorabilia bin. You can always revisit it later and decide if you’re ready to let it go.

Space Saving Tips for Closets

If you’re tight on space, consider storing off-season clothing in labeled bins in another room or storage area. This simple shift can instantly create more breathing room in your everyday closet.

When working with clients, I also focus on space planning and making small adjustments that can have a big impact. Adding extra shelves or hooks, or simply adjusting existing shelving to better fit what you own, can make your closet feel so much more functional. If you already have a closet system like Elfa, you might explore adding components—especially additional shelving for shoes—to maximize your space. If you have an older home with small closets, or just don’t know how to effectively use your space, thoughtfully chosen containers can greatly improve accessibility and organization. And if you’re ready for a bigger transformation, I can also help guide you through a closet redesign that truly works for your lifestyle.

Other Considerations: Consistency and Lighting

One of my favorite closet tips is to use matching hangers. This can mean either sorting your current hangers into categories by style or color, or purchasing new ones. Matching hangers instantly create a cohesive, elevated look — and you may just find yourself doing a double take every time you open your closet door!

Another often-overlooked detail is lighting. Can you clearly see your clothing in the morning? Make sure you’re maximizing wattage and replace any burned-out bulbs in existing lighting. You might also consider adding rechargeable, stick-on LED lighting under shelves, or having an electrician install additional lighting. It’s often more affordable than you may think, and makes a big difference in helping you actually see (and enjoy) what you own.

These small changes can make a huge impact in your daily routine, and you don’t have to do it alone. At Embrace Your Space, we believe your home should support you, starting with the spaces you use every day.
